Workshops Overview
As part of the USC Games Initiative from 2013-2020 I learned a lot about what makes a given experience pleasant or unpleasant as well as rewarding or unrewarding. I strive to infuse my workshops with that knowledge in order to make learning these topics immersive and fulfilling for audience members.
Workshop Topics Include
- Disabilities and mental health
- Videogame Play and mindfulness
- Meditation and Mindfulness in everyday life
- Self-Esteem Improvement
- How to turn negative feedback into a personal win
Disabilities and Mental Health
Disability-Affirmative Therapy (D-AT) was developed to specifically address the unique needs of people with disabilities (PWD) who struggle with their mental health.
My Bridging the Gap workshop is meant for people who have a disability who aim to improve their mental health. Attendees will learn about how to think about their disability from both a big-picture perspective and will also provide specific strategies and exercises that may help them better cope with their disability.
My Open the Gates, All are Welcome: How to Navigate Mental Health and Disabilities from a Clinical Psychologist with a Disability and Mental Health Overview workshop is meant for any group of people who work or interact frequently with PWDs. Attendees will learn about basic terminology related to disabilities, increase their awareness about some of the invisible barriers people with disabilities face, types of disabilities, and how to work with PWDs in a way that is more thoughtful and sensitive. Attendees will also be provided with an overview of D-AT and how a clinical psychologist thinks about this issue.
Videogame Play and Mindfulness
If you can master yourself, you can master anything. Take my workshop Unlocking the Positive Power of Gaming and learn about how to play videogames in a more meditative way. This can help gamers hone in on how to play their videogames in a way that is more helpful to their mental health. The instructions on how to play mindfully were developed and studied for several years as part of a doctoral dissertation.
Another workshop I offer, Conquering the Console, is meant for professionals who are novice or green in the world of videogame play, yet, work with gamer populations. It provides an overview on some of the basic terminology within the world of videogame play and outlines factors that can make videogame play helpful or harmful for those who play them. This workshop is ideal for counselors who want to learn how to utilize their client’s videogame play habits to help improve the therapy process.
Meditation and Mindfulness in Everyday Life
My Slice of Serenity workshop is best thought of as a self-care booster. Attendees will learn some of the basics of mindfulness and meditation, develop a specific self-care plan to enact once the workshop concludes, and they will also be led in a live meditation by me. The focus of the workshop is to help attendees learn how to make the most of their relaxation and leisure time in order to improve their overall mental health.
Self-Esteem Improvement
Sometimes we beat ourselves up in spite of making every conscious effort we can to avoid doing so. Why does this happen? My Surging your Self-Esteem workshop will help attendees learn more about why we experience shame, guilt, and self-criticism as well as what kinds of strategies help effectively navigate such thoughts and feelings. This is an ideal workshop for college students and other young adults.
How to Turn Negative Feedback into a Personal Win
My Receiving Critical Feedback workshop is designed to help people feel better about facing criticism specifically related to a project or their work. Attendees will learn a wide range of strategies to feel better about the criticism we have received from others but to also turn such criticism into a personal win.
