Merging Technology with Psychological Interventions
As part of the USC Games initiative from 2013-2020 I learned about user experience, gaming mechanics, and various ways to enhance immersion for a user. I have worked to identify where these technology user experience principles can compliment psychological interventions. Stated another way, I am knowledgeable in deconsctructing the principles of technology that might enhance one’s mental health. I love when I am able to share this knowledge with others who are in the tech or product design field.
Self-Help Approaches to Mental Health Treatment
In learning about how to apply tech to mental health, I have also had to learn about how to impart therapy without the therapist being in the room with the client. This has given me a depth of knowledge on how to get the therapy lesson or strategy to someone without the therapist needed. I can help people better understand how to bolster or increase the effectiveness of self-help approaches to mental heath. I can also provide insights on how a self-help approach can fit into a broader system of care.
Videogame Play, Gamers and Mental Health
How can the design of a videogame, or the process of playing a videogame, make a positive difference for the mental health of a gamer? This is one of the most common lines of inquiry I receive and I am always happy to consult with anyone wanting to learn more about this topic.
